AMPOL Completes Shallow Water Skimmer

MARCO Skimmer

MARCO SkimmerAmerican Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL), a leading oil spill response and total environmental solutions provider, has completed the acquisition and reconstruction of a newly restored shallow water skimmer vessel.

AMPOL's shallow water skimmer is one of the best of its kind. Unique in its design and engineering, the vessel was altered to incorporate a dual outboard system and an independent hydraulic engine to a belt driven hydraulic system.

Vessel construction began with the hull. Subsequently, a conveyer assembly, hydraulic system and an outboard engine system were added to the skimmer. This specific skimmer took six months to complete and is now response ready. A test run was conducted on Jan. 19 and garnered exceptional results.

"Not only does this piece of equipment expand our skimmer inventory to two, it also reaffirms AMPOL's commitment to quality and innovation," said AMPOL CEO Kirk Headley. "Beneficial to our clients and the environment, the construction of this skimmer has broadened our response capabilities."

As a total environmental solutions provider AMPOL focuses on restoration, going beyond response and cleanup.

AMPOL employs nearly 200 employees and offers oil spill response, tank cleaning, confined space entry services, naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) survey and remediation, lead and asbestos abatement services, insulation services, hazardous material (HAZ-MAT) emergency cleanup, soil remediation, demolition services, marine transportation and spill equipment manufacturing.

AMPOL Partners with Texas Workforce Solutions

WorkforceAmerican Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL) has partnered with Texas Workforce Solutions to successfully conduct and complete another session of Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) training. The need for two drivers and four environmental technicians at its Nederland location led AMPOL to establish a partnership with the Orange, Texas, branch of the Southeast Texas Workforce Center's Employer Solutions Unit.

Texas Workforce held two successful hiring events, which lead AMPOL to provide HAZWOPER training at the center's Orange, Texas, location. The session ended with the HAZWOPER certification of four Workforce attendees.

HAZWOPER training is required by OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) to conduct hazardous materials (HAZMAT) work. HAZWOPER 40-hour training is required for workers that perform activities that expose or potentially expose them to hazardous substances.

AMPOL provides in-house, 40-hour HAZWOPER (CFR 29 1910.120) training conducted by certified training instructor, Lawrence A. Smothers. Since June 2005, Smothers has maintained the roles of Training Director, Safety Officer and Project Manager of AMPOL. During the Deepwater Horizon event, Smothers was responsible for training and certifying more than 800 AMPOL employees in HAZWOPER.
